Hydro Testing of a cylinder, also known as hydrostatic testing, is a non-destructive process in which cylinders are tested for leaks, structural flaws, durability, and strength. In other words, cylinder hydro testing is used for determining how a cylinder will perform under extreme pressure. This assesses the pressure tightness and ensures that the cylinder can perform accurately.
In general, hydrostatic testing determines the integrity of piping systems, gas cylinders, boiler components, and all other pressure vessels such as cylinders. Cylinders that require hydrostatic testing are SCBA Gas cylinders, SCUBA Gas cylinders, CABA Gas cylinders, and Fire extinguisher Cylinders.
How is hydrogen cylinder testing performed?
To perform a hydrostatic test, the vessel has to be filled with a largely incompressible liquid, which is water in most cases. Then the liquid is pressurised so that the safety of the system can be verified after identifying any permanent changes in the shape of the vessel and by examining for leaks.Hydrogen cylinder testing is of two types mainly:
1. The first type is conducted after the construction is complete. It includes a tank test for pressure integrity and confirming that all welds are intact.
2. The second type of hydrostatic testing involves the evaluation of specific components such as tanks or pumps used in underground storage systems.
Why is it important to do hydrogen cylinder testing?
Cylinders require hydrostatic testing to make sure that they will not fail under pressure during real-world application. Because if high-pressure cylinders have even a tiny bit of structural fault, they can explode under pressure and can lead to serious harm in critical situations.
What precautions should be taken during hydrotesting?
Hydrostatic testing is a process that contains potential hazards. Thus, it is crucial to take precautions to avoid any injury or fatality. At PLS services, We have laid down a number of safety measures. Some such safety tips are as follows:
To ensure the safety of personnel involved in testing, workers must wear protective equipment, such as equipment eyes and ears.
Make sure that air ventilation is provided at the highest elevation.
Before hydro test work, conduct a risk assessment.
Inspect all equipment properly and use only those materials in their best condition.
Prepare a pressure relief valve for hydrostatic testing to avoid overpressure
Barricade the hydraulic test area and pin warning signs to prevent unauthorised entry of personnel.
Only use those pressure gauges and pressure relief valves that are calibrated.
The rating of fittings, vent, gauges, and valves must be appropriate and adequate for the test pressure.
The supervisors must be present at the job site during every hydro test testing activities.
Get a safety work permit and make sure that everyone in the work area follows the applicable standard.
