CNG stands for compressed natural gas. CNG is a clean-burning, renewable fuel that produces fewer emissions than diesel, gasoline, and propane. When you have a leak in your car, it causes carbon monoxide to fill the cabin. If you don’t find and repair your leak soon, it can cause suffocation. CNG leaks can be fatal, and therefore, it is extremely important to detect and repair these gas leaks.
CNG Leakage Testing is made mandatory by the government, which is required to be done periodically every quarter or every three months. We, at PLS, provide this service to get your CNG vehicle checked for any leakages. This is ensured by using highly standardised leak detectors and other equipment to check for faults.
How to check for CNG leaks?
Remember, before fixing a leak at a connection, depressurize the system completely. The key steps of this process are as follows:
1. Start by using a leak detector, a sniffer.
2. Next, use a solution to look for bubbling or foaming at the leak point. Always give it at least ten minutes since not all leaks will be apparent right away. After a few minutes, even a tiny leak may appear as foam and no bubbles.
3. Examine for frost or ice around tubing our connectors. Frost is an indication of loose-fitting.
4. Finally, check for signs of damage to tubing.
5. Tighten the leaking tube fitting by using the proper backup wrench. If the leak cannot be fixed, replace the component or the tubing.
6. After pressurising, always retest the repaired parts.
Precautions that must be taken during checking for CNG leaks
Below are the safety measures one must take while checking for CNG leaks to avoid personal injury and possible health hazards.
Never use an open flame to search for a leak.
Do not smoke during the process.
Keep any ignition sources, such as welding equipment and grinders, away from the CNG system and fueling areas.
CNG systems should only be serviced in well-ventilated areas
Your shop crew should always be aware of potentially hazardous conditions and therefore, make sure to inform others when servicing CNG equipment.
A fitting under pressure should never be tightened, loosened, or checked for tightness because a fitting that fails under pressure can be extremely dangerous.
If you suspect a leak or smell gas, check all connections and fittings using certified leak detection equipment, most leaks are generally found under a connection.
